Digital Screen-Use and Healthy Development: New Connections and Blurred Boundaries

Training Description: Every stage of development a child reaches now comes with dilemmas about the amount of freedom to allow when it comes to media, cell phones, social networks, browsing the web and video games.  As screen-use becomes more common, our culture increasingly normalizes the idea that while brains and bodies are developing, they will also busy sending, receiving, downloading and uploading. This raises big questions about what we truly value in family life and makes it difficult for parents and therapists to know how to best support the social, emotional and physiological needs of kids when so much of attention and exploration is directed toward the digital realm.  

“New Connections and Blurred Boundaries” offers an approach to building, "Safety, Trust and Respect in The Digital Age" that puts everyone on the same page (even when that page is digital) around issues of health and safety as well as positive social and family values.

Learning Objectives:

Following the presentation, attendees will be able to:
  • List the ways new technologies (smart phones, video games, social media and the internet) impact the lives of children and families
  • Discuss what clinicians and parents might actually encourage and support when it comes to apps, social media and video games
  • Define why the majority of today’s families need interventions that cover more than just “Internet Safety” and “Internet Addiction”
  • Use a relationship based approach to talking to families that includes: Safety, Trust, Awareness and Respect
  • Apply this method to better determine: what’s normal, what needs further investigation and what is a red flag
About the Presenter: Jason Brand, LCSW is a family therapist in Berkeley.  He specializes in providing support to families in a rapidly changing world where digital technologies are transforming our lives. His work takes place in schools and with organizations where he leads workshops about the entanglements of families, culture and technology.  His book, “1 to 1 at Home: A Parent’s Guide to School-Issued Laptops and Tablets” is a practical guide to integrating new technologies into family life.  In his private practice, Jason counsels families with children and adolescents. Bay Area Psychotherapy Training Institute

We at are a non-profit, public benefit corporation founded over 20 years ago to provide high quality therapy services to clients in local communities including Lafayette, Moraga, Orinda, Canyon, Concord and Walnut Creek.  BAPTI offers internships to qualified applicants who possess a master's degree or doctorate in Counseling Psychology or other appropriate major from an accredited university program.  BAPTI utilizes a private practice model that provides training and support for interns and guides them in developing, marketing and managing their own practices. BAPTI also offers a school-based program that supports interns in creating new alliances with schools and other agencies for specialized experiences. ​ We also support a group of independent licensed practice clinicians who realize the importance of establishing a professional community whose purpose is to support one another through continuing education, formal and informal consultations, and the sharing of our experiences in a variety of settings. We hold firmly that the private practice of therapy should not be an isolating experience and that clinical work is enhanced by frequent peer interactions.
